Kathleen is still under 24hr care and her daughters continue to grow older and mature. Samie graduated from middle school and will attend high school on Monday and Rachel is in middle school. Kathleen is still visited frequently and has wonderful caregivers who love her very much.

I've been asked why I haven't been updating this site as frequently. The answer is that though my family and I can never forget Kathleen and appreciate the support my family and I received, we need to live our lives in the present rather than the past. Its hard for me to come to this blog and view the videos and a life which I now seem removed from. I will always love Kathleen, but I now love someone new and have a responsibility and the desire to focus on her and the well being of my daughters. I know Kathleen would not only understand, but would long ago have encouraged me to have done so.
Kathleen is doing fine after a recent bout with the flu as is Samie who got an even more virulent flu.

Kathleen had a bit of cake for her birthday and Rachel and Mike came to visit her for dinner. Samie was away for a backpacking trip muck like her mother did when she was younger.

Kathleen has a family reunion this weekend which she will not attend. Hopefully she will receive some visits from family members and in some fashion feel their love on the way to Hollister.

Samie has experienced a really tough few months. The loss of our close friend monster rich followed by her 11 year old friend Alexis were very difficult. For a time she retreated into melancholy but recently seems to have emerged and wrote this beautiful poem for Alexis:
I remember when we used to play,
Each and every sun-filled day.
With a smile, sweet as honey,
You: as animated as a bunny.
You would laugh as we would run
And we would have so much fun.

Just yesterday, we were playing ball;
Our big, bad Griggins won it all.
Then, Magic came along,
And without you days seemed so long.
The sky began to gray.
Alexis, please don't fade away.

I will search for someone as sweet as you.
An impossible task; unrealistic, too.
As I look up to the big blue sky

The girls were busy nearly all day with sporting events but got to see their mom and deliver presents in the afternoon. Rachie and Samie read poems to her and then went swimming in the back yard to relax.

Kathleen continues in good health. Samie had part of her cold pool party in the backyard last Saturday. Unfortunately, Kathleen seems to be left out of family functions and visits more and more often. Its so hard to know if she registers anything after years of effort on our (and certainly her) part. The girls seem to need to move on now and rarely visit. I do not force the issue as I do not want to build resentment. I know Kathleen would understand and wish the best for the girls. Last week was a hard one as Mike attended the funeral of a good friend of Kathleen and the girls. Rich fought bravely against cancer and will be missed. Michelle and Lucy are in our whole family's thoughts

Mike and the kids went to see a very close friend, Rich, and his family last weekend. Fighting through cancer Rich was still lucid, brave, and funny. We received the horrible news last night. Rich will be missed. I think I can imagine what Michelle is going through right now. It is so unfair. Michelle and Lucy are in our thoughts.

Happy New Year! Kathleen has been remarkably healthy this winter so far. We are hoping that continues. The girls are enjoying a brief respite from their athletic endeavors but aren't exactly thrilled to be back in school.

Kathleen got a visit from her sick daughters who had to stand by the door and later a long visit from her sister, brother-in-law and nieces and nephews. Together they watched part of the polar express and really enjoyed the time together. Kathleen is well but status quo with this time last year. Though she isn't physically well, we are certainly hopeful that she is spiritually as well as can be.

Kathleen came over and had dinner across the street with the girls. It was a wonderful, low stress day with family and close friends. I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Kathleen has been fairly healthy since her bout with sickness earlier, but has been throwing up more than normal.

Letters pleading for help with similar situations continue to trickle in years after Kathleen's traumatic event. I feel powerless to help for the most part as there still isnt a solution and stem cell help seems even further away. Just feeling a bit melancholy tonight.

Very soon, Mike and the girls will be moving across the street. It was a long and agonizing journey to get to this point, but I think it is the right choice. Kathleen will stay in our current house and continue to receive the excellent one on one care she has been given. The move across the street will give the girls and I some semblance of normalcy (and they will get to visit their mom often, and on their terms).

Mike and the girls returned from a wonderful 2 week trip to Costa Rica and gave mommy a big hug and a present. The girls had a great time (other than Rachel breaking her arm) and returned filled with stories to tell there friends about. Thanks to those who came to visit Kathleen while we were away.

The girls returned from BC where their former nanny, Trish, married Sean Denison in a beautiful ceremony in Nelson. Unexpectedly the girls were flower girls and performed their duties admirably.

Kathleen had a minor scare when her feeding tube popped out but the caregiver and her mom were able to put it back in. Kathleen seems fine now.

The girls had a really nice 4th of July filled with friends and fireworks.

One week from today, the girls former nanny, Trisha, is getting married to Sean Denison.

Tomorrow is Kathleen's 5th birthday 'celebration' since her accident. As usual, there still doesn't seem like much to celebrate but the girls and I are going shopping today for some goodies for her.

Congrats to Samie and Rachie's softball teams who both finished 2nd in their respective tournaments over the weekend. Both teams went 5-1 and Samie pitched well in 2 games.

Kathleen spent today outside in the backyard and was able to taste the juice of some of our wonderful cherries. She even swallowed appropriately. :)

Kathleen was able to have a good visit from her sister and her family this past weekend. Sunday and Monday, however, Kathleen vomited several times and looked miserable. Nobody else in the house has been sick and her room is cool so it seems a little strange. Hopefully she will feel better today.

Adult Neurogenesis may be even more active than previously thought.

The Saratoga Basketball Camp commences next week to benefit the Global Ischemia Foundation.

Kathleen is doing okay though we are having some problems with some of her equipment. The girls are rolling with softball again and Samie will soon graduate from 5th Grade. Another big event Kathleen will miss, but hopefully she can still be proud of her daughter.

One of Samie's best friends was recently diagnosed with cancer. Please say a prayer for Alexis.

Nothing new to report. Kathleen is still healthy but hasn't made any noticeable progress and the girls are getting back into the summer softball swing. Samie's basketball team is playing for the championship this weekend and Rachie's all-star team is playing in Livermore.

Samie had a wonderful birthday yesterday with lots of laughing and great friends over for a swim party. The only thing missing from the party was Kathleen - such a fixture at birthday's past. Samie told her about the afternoon afterwards with subdued tones. Samie really misses her mom.

Kathleen did well during a quick getaway to the snow by Samie and Rachie. The girls were able to get their first ski runs in and really enjoyed the time off.

Kathleen has gained weight the past few month and a dietitian has changed her intake. Hopefully this will make her healthier and also allow her weight to stabilize helping the caregivers.

The relationship between Kathleen and the girls has again changed. The girls now rarely talk about her, except for occasionally saying things like "I can't remember how she talked anymore." In addition, understandably yet sadly, they are no longer excited to go and give their long goodnight stories to her and now do so more infrequently. As much as I want Kathleen to hear their voices at night, I am not willing to force them to say goodnight and resent their mom. :(

Four Years. No improvements for Kathleen though her constitution remains good. The girls have improved significantly and are again living their lives as Kathleen would want, but as always it seems so unfair to Kathleen that she cannot share it with them. As Kathleen's four year anniversary approaches I often wonder what it might feel like to be imprisoned in your body for such a long stretch. The wonderful yet sad film I saw last night, Diving Bell and the Butterfly gives some indication but the man had some outlet to the outside world. I suspect that Kathleen must at least feel the love and warmth around her but as the stream of visitors and even visits of family members and from the kids and I becomes less frequent...does she notice that too? Its not fair but its reality and it is sometimes hard to reckon with. Here is a trailer for the fantastic movie. While at the movie last night I bumped into someone whose wife had also had a massive stroke. It wasn't surprising that Kaiser had failed her beforehand by sending her home when she had symptoms and has fought with her husband since by trying to avoid provide proper care for her.

Kathleen has experienced a very difficult two days after catching the girls stomach flu virus. She has been completely unable to keep down liquids until early this morning and looks frustratingly ill. Hopefully she will continue to mend this morning and afternoon.

The family is again trying to resolve some caregiver issues. Its obviously difficult to maintain the status quo, but Kathleen's care has as a whole been exemplary and her lack of bed sores has stunned the doctors.

Another sad once meaningful day passed today. Fifteen years ago was wedding day for Kathleen, and though today involved a nice massage in the morning by the evening she was struggling just to keep her oxygen up to acceptable levels. Kathleen seems healthy but she was coughing a lot this evening.

Kathleen had the full body spa treatment yesterday with the massage, hair cut and wash etc. She did very well at the spa and seemed to enjoy having her hair done.

Kathleen had a wonderful visit with her cousin and family who came from South Carolina and the kids had a great time too. The family has made some inquiries to various doctors and researchers concerning Deep Brain Stimulation but no response has been received as of yet.

Mike and the kids returned today from a whirlwind tour of Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons. During the trip there was spotty cell phone reception and it was hard to contact Kathleen every night. During the trip Kathleen received a burn on her wrist and it is impossible to find out how it happened but it appears to be getting better. Samie was frantic when she heard about her burn and gave her mom a big hug.

While we were gone there was news that a man who was minimally conscious has begun to communicate by the use of deep brain stimulation. Doctors at Kaiser told us when we asked three years ago about this treatment that Kathleen, despite the same diagnosis, was not a candidate. After asking Kaiser about this treatment next week, the family will likely investigate the treatment through Valley Medical without health care coverage.

Congratulations to Rachel who got a double in her softball team's championship game. The Crush only lost 2 games all summer and won all their tournaments except one.

Sydney left yesterday.

Interesting study confirming earlier studies that growth hormones can help in brain injury recovery. The conclusion that these test should be tried on humans is even more intriguing/hopeful.

Kathleen had a great birthday party today surrounded by her family and nearly 25 friends. She received many thoughtful presents and Samie, who was subdued and somewhat sad through much of the day, wrote her a poem entitled 'My Mommy'

Happy? Birthday Kathleen. Bean was able to throw caution to the wind today and have some diet coke...a soft drink she loved but rarely indulged in as she knew it was bad for her. In the end she probably should have indulged in all of her favorites as apparently caution and fitness matters little. Kathleen actually sipped and swallowed the diet coke today and appeared to enjoy it.

The Family will celebrate Kathleen and Sheila's birthday tomorrow afternoon. Michelle we are thinking about you and your family too.

Kathleen is coming up on her 4th birthday since the accident with no hope yet in site. The family is continuing to look for a live-in nanny to replace Trisha who returned home to Canada. The girls miss Trisha very much but are caught up on the softball circuit and basketball camps so they don't have much time to think about it right now.

Kathleen had a really tough day due to the fact that her suction machine broke today and it took nearly all day for Apria to deliver a new machine. Thanks to Kathleen's caring godfather at Kaiser, her respiratory therapist Luis, who continued to hound Apria until they finally delivered the new device. Kathleen went to sleep early tonight resting after the additional breathing stress today.

It is 'moral' for George Bush to spy on US Citizens without warrants but apparently immoral to conduct stem cell people to help the injured or people with debilitating diseases. George Bush vetoed the stem cell bill and flaunted congresses subpoenas for information on his warrantless domestic spying program. George Bush must live in opposite world.

Nothing new from Kathleen. She has gone off blood thinners which might increase her risk of a blood clot, but at least she is getting more "poison" out of her body. Originally, the blood thinner she was on was used as rat poison.

Tomorrow is a worldwide Heart Rhythm Day to publicize the fact that slow heart rates, like Kathleen had, might actually be a heart defect rather than just the 'heart of an athlete in Olympic level shape' as Kathleen's doctor told her. This problem can be especially acute if there are instances of fainting, collapses or seizures. Kathleen had all three occurences but was ignored by Kaiser. :( Thrive!

After several months of eeg biofeedback, most of the caregivers and I have concluded that there has been little change in Kathleen. We are going to continue the therapy for awhile, but no longer see much hope.

Can George Bush do anything to HELP Americans?
