Struggling to remain warm due to a malfuctioning heater Kathleen nonetheless. The folks at DEVCON immediately responded to the call about the heater and someone was on our doorstep the next morning.

Happy Birthday Tutu!

Several of the family members went on an outing to San Francisco today. Kathleen was missed, yet when her brother from Arizona said goodbye, she seemed to have a twinkle in her eye.

Kathleen went to Hollister with her family for Thanksgiving was again up for a long time. She rested in her sisters bed for awhile, but by the end of the day when she arrived home, she was clearly exhausted and overtired and eventually threw up before she fell asleep.

More interesting stem cell news:

Kathleen made the long drive to Kaiser Redwood City for an evaluation by a physical medicine and rehabilitation doctor. She was up in her chair for over 5 hours. On the way home she let out a few exhaused sighs, but for the most part was a real trooper.

Kathleen had another rough day. Her suction machine broke and she was struggling to breathe. Thanks to Luis, the respiratory therapist "one of the good ones at Kaiser" who dropped everything to come and see Kathleen, Apria (yeah dealing with medical supply companies is so fun) was pressured to bring a new one by immediately (or meet the family at the ER later). Kathleen's secretions are also more of a concern as they are now yellow suggesting a likely bacterial infection.

Kathleen had a good day. Hoorah! She got a wonderful massage which last nearly 90 minutes. For the first time in a long time she seemed completely relaxed and it seemed to clear up her lungs a bit. The massage therapist found some pressure points that Kathleen showed significant reaction to which she hadn't responded to before. In truly a tough week, Kathleen's best moments were all during massages.

Congratulations to "the Bagel Man" who's team won their first game of the season 97-53.

Lawsuits against the California Stem Cell Initiative are not only delaying cures to diseases, but are potentially leading to the US falling behind in the race for the cures http://cbs5.com/topstories/local_story_324164426.html

Kathleen finished a tough week with a nice visit from her sister and the Martins Clan. After the kids went to bed, the family watched a wonderful yet heart-wrenching movie, Millions which hit a little to close to home.

Kathleen struggled all day yesterday and around 7:30 appeared to be on the verge of vomitting. She visibly fought it [previous to her injury she hated throwing up and willed herself not to and only threw up once during our entire marriage...a legend like Jerry Seinfeld's feat :) ]. After succeeding in her battle not to throw up, Kathleen fell asleep and wasn't suctioned out the entire evening.

Kathleen had two more terrible evenings full of coughing and phlegm. She does not have a fever nor colored mucous so she doesn't appear sick, but she has been terribly uncomfortable and having great difficulty sleeping. :(

Kathleen watched as her kitchen was gutted and seemed moderately effected by the dust, which considering the remodel, was relatively minimal.
Thanks to whoever provided Kathleen with the new blanket. It is her favorite color :)
11/12/05
After a day watching her kitchen be empied of all products in preparation for the remodel. Kathleen had a tough evening later. She threw up around midnight and was unable to get back to sleep all night. She coughed up phlegm all evening and seemed very uncomfortable.

One of Kathleen's sisters and her sister in-law Kim had a dream over a year ago that Kathleen woke up from her coma and asked to 'see the baby.' This morning at 4:30 AM Nicholas Ryan, Kathleen's nephew, was born. We are thrilled for Kim and Vari and hopeful for Kathleen.

Go Geron
After speaking several times with professors at Geron and being told that Kathleen could not participate in such studies as of now (due to their fears) I had to write this. I hate to inject politics into something that is about Kathleen Davey, the person, but in order for us to have her back the way she would want to be, it might necessitate even more of this.

The Republican Party under George Bush pretends to be
the standard bearer for morals in the nation. They've
incorporated religion to justify their actions in both
the war on terrorism and legislating the social agenda
at home. Under this argument, anybody who stands
against their actions is anti-American and against
God. The climate of fear Bush churns up has polarized
the nation and made both the media and citizens afraid
to stand up against our evils abroad. We are
torturing prisoners and committing terrible crimes
abroad while a corrupt administration both denies and
signs off on the actions. At home, the fear is
exuded by the American scientific community which is
afraid to cross the Republicans regarding stem cells
cells. In the article 'Geron wants to test stem-cell
spinal cord treatment in humans,' the fear scientists
have of the FDA is plainly evident. A single mistake
in this pursuit of these cures might lead to an
administration shut down of the industry, and with
that the hopes of the needy. The administration's
actions in creating such a climate are inexusable.
For those of us who need such treatment to restore our
lives or have our loved ones returned to us it seems
as if Bush just doesn't care. The current
administration does not have a monopoly on morality
rather it enacts heartless policy on a needy and
suffering public. Whilst fighting terror abroad Bush
has engendered more poignant fears at home.

After arising from frequent and painful nightmares concerning Kathleen last night, Mike woke up determined to make positive changes. After a trainload of family and friends went to the farmer's market with Kathleen in the morning, the rest of the day was marked by significant changes to try and benefit Kathleen. Both Apria and Kaiser were given more pressure to start delivering the correct equipment to Kathleen, the room was reaaranged to reduce dust, cat dander, and mold and Mike purchased Christmas presents for Kathleen which can potentially increase her mobility. Sadness and remorse are ever present, but capitulation isn't near.

There was a wonderful gathering of friends, family, and dogs for a great bbq at the house this evening. Kathleen was awake the entire evening during the party and slept well afterwards.

Kaiser Killed Kathleen. Not they continue to do there shoddy work to others. In the past day, they've sent the wrong supplies to Kathleen (after 9months at home) including a pediatric trach, the wrong trach collars, and the absence of some needed items. They also failed to check a friend of a friend for heart difficulties even after he fainted after physical exercise and a few months later experienced dizzy spells. Then, this. All the while, they continue to run an expensive media campaign and spend oodles of money on new facilites. Perhaps physician training is in order instead?

Kathleen had a peaceful day with a long wheelchair walk, and good rest when she returned.
